This is a writing piece of my thoughts on Ernest Hemingway’s short story Hills Like White Elephants.
I really enjoyed reading this because the character’s story is so captivating despite the lack of description in their tones of voices and actions. I like the character of the girl the most. She seems young, probably much more than the man. I think she is trying to impress him by talking about new drinks and the hills in the scenery. She seems so infatuated with him and she would do anything to make him happy such as agreeing to the procedure. She says, “And if I do it you’ll be happy and things will be like they were and you’ll love me?” That leads me to believe the only reason she will go through the procedure would be to make him happy. I think he is lying to her when he says he loves her and the things she is saying and the things she does. I believe that once she has the procedure he will leave her. I think the elephant hills represents the “elephant in the room” They’re both trying to avoid talking about what actually happens during the procedure. I believe, along with many others that the procedure is an abortion. I think that the girl wants to keep the baby since she keeps talking about how they could be perfectly happy and get along. The man keeps insisting he’d be fine with it if she didn’t want to have the procedure, but is strongly hinting that he would be more happy if she did.
